The Denver Broncos hired former Super Bowl champion coach Sean Payton to right the ship after a disastrous 5-12 season.

Payton’s first major task will be fixing the play of franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, who looked like one of the worst starters in the NFL last season during large swaths of play.

While it remains to be seen how Wilson performs this year, he entered camp noticeably thinner after losing 15 pounds in the offseason.

Speaking with Kay Adams on Up & Adams, Payton revealed his gratitude for Wilson going the extra mile with his preparation entering the season.

“His movement skills have been impressive,” Payton said about Russell. “His off-schedule plays—every practice, you see an example of one or two. It really forces the receivers to (be active and alert).

“If you are not open in the initial route progression and the pocket moves one way, you have to move with it. His location has been really good. I think the last week-and-a-half or two weeks have been really impressive.”

If Wilson can regain the old form he showcased with the Seattle Seahawks, then the Broncos almost certainly will do better than last year’s dubious performance.

The Broncos kick off their season at home against the Oakland Raiders on Sept 10th.
