The series between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals doesn’t have the playoff implications that people thought it’d have at the beginning of the season. But there’s some drama, thanks to Pete Alonso.
One of baseball’s top prospects, Masyn Winn, made his Major League debut on Friday. In the fifth inning, Winn hit a slow chopper to third base, which ended up being his first career base hit when he easily beat the throw from Jonathan Araúz.
Normally, when a player gets his first hit and it’s not a home run, someone on the fielding team will throw the ball into the hitting team’s dugout. But Alonso didn’t do that. He chucked the ball into the crowd.

This created some tension between Alonso and the Cardinals dugout. And since the Cardinals dugout is on the first base side, the tension was strong enough that the game had to be briefly delayed while first base umpire John Tumpane tried to calm things down.
Fortunately, it ended up with a happy ending, as the fan who got the ball eventually gave it back.

Alonso certainly should have been more attentive. That said, this is (or at least should be) an all’s well that ends well situation. If nothing else, the young lady who ended up with the ball probably ended up with some nice gear in a trade.
