The Ohio State Buckeyes have yet to name a starting quarterback for the upcoming 2023 football season, and one former Ohio State player seems to think the long quarterback battle gives the edge to a surprising player.
While Kyle McCord might be the higher-rated and more experienced player vying for the job. But with as long as this quarterback competition has dragged on, former Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry seems to think it gives the edge to the younger player, Devin Brown.
“A lot of people thought it was just going to be Kyle McCord’s job and Devin Brown maybe could push but wouldn’t really be in the mix there. This thing is actually very, very close. And from the people that I’ve spoken to, they’re confident in either quarterback’s ability to go out there and be successful. I think they’re just looking for that consistency. It feels like as this drags out a little bit more, it does start to favor a younger guy in Devin Brown who’s got some really good movement skill and athletic ability,” Perry told ESPN’s Greg McElroy this week.

Perry acknowledges that since McCord has been on campus longer and still hasn’t won the job, that increases the possibility that Brown could earn it instead.
“What’s interesting to me though is the fact that Kyle McCord did come in as the experienced guy. He’s been on campus, really, for three seasons now and hasn’t really been able to pull away in that job. I’m not exactly sure what it’s going to come down to. Every coach likes to say ‘The guy who makes the least mistakes and gives us the best chance to win.’ I think it’s going to be maybe a little more than that,” Perry said.
We’ll have to see what ultimately happens.
