Former American president Donald Trump, love him or hate him, is a titan when it comes to television ratings.
This makes it understandable that Fox News executives like President Jay Wallace and CEO Suzanne Scott traveled to Bedminster, New Jersey, earlier this month to dine with Trump at his golf resort while trying to persuade him to participate in the upcoming debates hosted by the network, as The New York Times reported earlier this month.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal while on tour with fellow Fox News anchor Bret Baier, host Martha MacCallum defended her bosses’ actions in dining with Trump.
“I don’t think there’s anything unusual about executives interacting with top-level candidates,” MacCallum told The Wall Street Journal. “You want to make sure that you have an open line of communication and that everyone feels that they’re welcome and you want them on the stage.”
MacCallum also spoke on why she believes Trump should participate in the upcoming debates.
“You’ve seen in recent days, [former Trump Vice President] Mike Pence, [Floriida governor] Ron DeSantis sort of draw a sharper line against the former president, and I think it would give him an opportunity to speak to them in person in front of the country and let them know what he thinks,” MacCallum said.
