It wasn’t long ago Domingo Germán was celebrating a perfect game. It was only June in fact.

However, the New York Yankees pitcher was placed on the restricted list Wednesday after agreeing to voluntarily seek treatment for alcohol abuse.

The organization sent out a statement:

“Domingo Germán has agreed today to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. He will be placed on the Restricted List for the time that he is away from the club.

It is critical that Domingo completely focus on addressing his health and well-being. We will respect his privacy as he begins this process.”

This didn’t appear to be a new issue.

YES Network’s Jack Curry posted on Twitter/X to detail some of Yankees general manager Brian Cashman’s comments on Germán:

“Cashman said Germán has dealt with an alcohol issue in the past. But the GM added that there was a specific incident yesterday that triggered Germán agreeing to seek treatment. Cashman said he’s most concerned for Germán and his family and for Germán getting the help he needs.”

This adds to an already troubling road for Germán, who was suspended in 2019 when he was put on administrative leave while Major League Baseball investigated an alleged domestic violence incident involving his then-girlfriend during a team function. He then was suspended and missed 18 games in 2019, and all of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Manager Aaron Boone did say recently after Germán threw his perfect game against the Oakland A’s that he had noticed growth in the right-hander.

During the 2023 season, Germán possesses a 4.56 ERA with 114 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings.
